Doing business in Fiji

Punctuality at functions or meetings is not expected, and ‘Pacific Time’ dictates that attendees may arrive late to scheduled events. The management of time is more flexible than in western societies.

Dress is relaxed and suits and ties are not expected. Bula dress (brightly coloured shirts and dresses) is common even for business meetings.

Business hours in Fiji are traditionally 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday.

Senior Fijian colleagues or clients may be quiet and may not express strong views, as would occur in Western societies. Such behaviour should not be interpreted to mean that they don’t have a view.

Kava (a mild narcotic drink) may be consumed at social functions, and there are particular formalities around the ceremony. Fijians are more than happy to explain the process to expats.

Prayers are said before meals. Reverence to elders is expected. Women may be called “Aunty”, particularly by Indo-Fijian children, which is a sign of respect.
