Healthcare in Tokyo

What healthcare plan you opt for will largely depend on your employer. While some foreigners in Japan take out international private health insurance, many companies prefer their employees to be on the Japanese national healthcare system. Monthly premiums are based on your annual income, so in your first year in Japan it might be very little. You will be liable for up to 30% of your medical expenses, however, and certain procedures might not be covered. Even if you are covered by an international health insurance company, you will have to pay upfront and request reimbursement directly from your health insurance scheme.
