Healthcare in Geneva

There is no state-sponsored healthcare system in Switzerland and all healthcare is private. It is mandatory to have coverage from a recognised Swiss health provider. Medical bills are paid out once you exceed your franchise amount, which starts from CHF300. The lower your monthly premiums, the higher the franchise amount tends to be, so take appropriate advice on the best solution for you.

Geneva’s hospitals and dental practitioners are excellent, particularly the cantonal Hospital, HUG (Hôpital Universitaire de Genève). Most doctors speak English. Pharmacies are open 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

There are nearly 2,000 doctors in private practice in Geneva, listed on the AMGE (Association des Medecins du canton de Genève) website, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to endure long wait times for an appointment date. If it is urgent call 022 322 20 20 and ask for “rendezvous rapides” which is a service that will find an appointment within three days.

The number for emergencies and the reassuringly named Cardiomobile is 144. For poisoning dial 145, child-related emergencies 147, and for phone counseling call the 143 La Main tendue help line.
