Will we be able to just use a U.S. bank and our debit cards!? Thank you, Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Depending on the bank that you are with in the US, you may find that they have branches in the Netherlands.

Regardless, I would advise you to visit a branch of the bank before leaving the US and inform them that your are moving to the Netherlands. They should then be able to set up your debit cards so that you can withdraw cash and use the cards to pay for things.Remember that you are likely to get charged fees for using your US card abroad.

However, if you plan on staying in the Netherlands in the long term it would be more cost effective and efficient to open a local bank account.

The Expat Arrivals page on Banking, Money and Taxes in the Netherlands provides a comprehensive overview of the banking system and contains tips for new expats in the country.
