Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help us? Myself and my girlfriend are looking into moving to Barcalona and as she is a wheelchair user and has muscular dystrophy we would like to know what the state welfare/benefit system is like in Barcalona as she may require this while we get set up with work etc? or even when i find steady work. All help appreciate :) Thanks OR Email me on allanmcenroe123@aol.com if you have been in or are in similar situation

Hi Allan-

Where are you from, and what visa will you be on in Barcelona? The nation in known for having a particularly good public healthcare system  that is available for free of at a low cost for residents and citizens. However, in order to take advantage of this system you will need to have signed up for Seguridad Social (social security) and you will then need to get a medical card. If you are a non-resident in Spain you cannot take advantage of this system. Thus you would need to take out private insurance and health insurance.

Hi Allan.

As has been previously stated a lot depends on where you are coming from. If from an EU country I think it may be possible to transfer certain benefits if you or your girlfriend are already receiving them. You will not normally be entitled to full medical care until you are working and contribute to the system here. However, if you are from the UK and having been working there, you may well be able to receive health care for a limited period of time depending on your national health contributions.

Some more information on your situation would help.
