Hi David,

Until the 1st of April 2014, it was possible to obtain a form from Home Affairs, which allowed people who were awaiting the outcome of a visa application to leave South Africa and travel back in. However, new regulations have now been brought in, which make everything a lot more difficult. It is not yet clear what the regulation is now. I have checked the Home Affairs website and there is no official information there on what you should do in a situation like yours. (actually, there wasn't anything there about the form before April 1st anyway, it was something you need to visit Home Affairs for)

My advise to you would be to head to your nearest Home Affairs office to find out where you stand. Take all you original documentation with you, including proof that you've submitted your application and a letter from the university outlining the nature of the trip and when you expect to be back. Cover all your bases. From my experience, you are likely to get a different story from each person you chat to at Home Affairs, so always take a note of who you've spoken to and try to get hold of senior member of staff.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck - hope you are able to go on the trip.
