I have recently signed a contract to work at KAU in Jeddah. The housing allowance is 17,000 SAR for the entire year. Posters on another forum have told me this is not much. I will be working by myself with no family and my lifestyle is spartan to put it mildly. I'd like to be within 2-3 miles of the school if possible but I get a transportation allowance so I could go further out. 1. Is it possible to rent an efficiency unit for this amount of money? If so, would it include utilities? 2. Do people with larger apartments or homes ever advertise for roommates? If so, how would I go about locating such situations? Local English newspaper? Local expat forum? Bulletin board at school. 3. Is it possible to find decent budget hotels? 4. If the above amount is insufficient, what is the least I can expect to pay? Thanks for any and all help. DirtGuy

Hi DirtGuy-

Yip, this definitely a VERY small allowance. Most expats lured abroad to the KSA look for at least 100,000 SAR as an annual housing allowance for a 1-2 bedroom apartment - though this pricing structure is normally associated with compound living. With that in mind, you should realise that living in Saudi outside of a compound can feel very isolationist.

Still, if you don't mind living in an apartment in Jeddah, than you should ask for at least 32,900 SAR - this was the average rental rate recorded in the city by AMEinfo.com in 2011 for a two-bedroom apartment. This doesn't include a deposit or utilties.

Hi

You will get housing at this price but it will be a 1 room apartment in the old area of the city where most of the factory and labour live.  This is ok if you are looking for 'cheap' and have a desire to mix in a very ethnic society.  If you are looking for experience and to cut cost to a minimum this is the place - you can eat ethnic food for pence, living cost will be very low but it is right in th centre of the heat of the city.

You mentioned you want ot be near a school but there are 100's of schools here catering for all nationalities and they are all over the city so without further information i can not help on this front.

If you want to be in a European community then the information already posted is correct.

I am not aware people with large house rent out rooms, but people on single status contracts do share houses and so reduce the costs.

Hope this helps

hi

Housing in the ecenomic end of the expat compound market is around SAR 30,000 - 40,000 a year so that might be in your budget and you can work upwards from there.  Also you can buy a car for any price here - you get what you pay for so small and old is cheap - big and new is expensive!

If you a married then you can go everywhere and do everything with your wife - the restrictions are for single men/women only.

Hi I have been offered a 6mth contract in Jeddah with a $2000 monthly accomodation allowance and a $10000 salary, but getting concerned the accommodation allowance won't be adequate, although it is only myself.. I have read many posts regarding rent and also cost for house keeper, food, utilities etc and can anyone give me an idea how much the cost of living would be for one month for a single person living sensibly ? would a hotel be a cheaper option ? also what are the restrictions I will face as a single male ? Really appreciate any assistance as this could be a really good opportunity, but only if it make financial sense ?

I just want to know since I have been here in Jeddah for 3 yrs now. If it is wise to take a job offer lower than what I am getting right now? Lets say if i am getting a basic of SR 3,850 + SR 962.50 Monthly Housing Allowance + SR 300 transportation allowance. Total SR 5,112. I plan to transfer to another company (Hotel)with free food (3 times a day), free housing (solo room),...But the Basic salary is just SR 3,200. That's it. Is it wise to accept it? The position is higher than what I am right now. I am an HR ASSISTANT right now and with the hotel job the offer is for me to be their Personnel Supervisor. What do you think?

Hi Anonymous,

If the job is what you want and there is room for career progression I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea, especially as your food and accomodation are provided.A room in a shared apartment will cost you around SAR 1,100. I am not sure who much you spend each month on food but I am sure when you add that in, there is not much difference between the two salaries.

You will simply need to factor in transport costs and what you usually spend on other activities each month and then see if SAR 3,200 is enough.

Take a look at our Cost of Living in Saudi Arabia page for more information.

Hi everyone, Myself, and my wife just moved from UK to Dubai few days ago to look for job opportunities in the region, yet a CEO of a good size organisation in Jeddah responded my wife resume discussing with her a marketing director position for a new company they are forming, she didn't discuss the salary and benefits with him yet since there will be another meeting soon. We are wondering what the expectation should be regarding salary and benefits and what restriction she would have as a British passport holder girl in Jeddah. Also how hard it should be for British electronic engineer mail who speak fluent English and Arabic and hold Master degree from UK and 10 years of experience in Sales and marketing in the Telecom and IT fields to find a proper job in Jeddah, and what salary I should aiming for? Any advise would be much appreciated. thank you
