Moving with my boyfriend - "the American" to New York City in two months. I can barely bring myself to buy boxes let alone imagine leaving my friends and family. Are there any British expats who could give any advice about making friends in Manhattan. I've heard the people are nasty, brutish and short; which sounds pretty much like London, so I'm not intimidated - I'm just wondering how to meet that first person and get the social circle growing. Thanks!

It's definitely not EASY making friends in NYC - but I think that goes for most places - it's not really specific to the city and it's inhabitants. Like you, I moved from Wales and left loads of friends and family back home. When I moved here with my partner I ended up spending oodles of time with him and his friends and I really started to miss female company. I finally joined the Big Apple Brits group - something I def recommend; they run an assortment of events and always seem to be sponsorting little occassions that remind you of home.

The other thing you can do - I know this sounds strange - is to get a dog. You'll be surprised how many people will just up and start a conversation with you. There's even places in the city where you can rent one of these furry friends for the day if you don't feel like you have the time or space to manage something more permanent.

Hi Stephanie,

New York is one of the most cosmopolitan, vibrant cities in the world and very much like London - so I doubt you'll have any trouble meeting people. There are plenty of Brits in the city as well as other expats from all over the world.

To make friend's in Manhatten consider joining some social clubs, sports teams or book groups and you'll be sure to meet like-minded people. Take a look at some of the interviews we've carried out with expats living in New York and the rest of the USA to get a better idea of expat life in the USA here : Expat Experiences in the USA

Good luck with the move and enjoy your time in New York!

Hi Stephanie You've probably made many friends by now, but thought I would add my 2 cents worth. Though not from UK I faced a similar situation moving away from my husband and friends in NYC to Washington DC where I took up a new job. I made like-minded people through meet up groups. First one I joined? Former New Yorkers in DC! Yay! For you, I have the following meetup groups (www.meetup.com) that may interest you: -- New York City British Expat Group -- British Expat Girls -- The New York British Social Group -- Big Apple Londoners -- Watch Soccer in NYC -- Touch Rugby There are a slew of others. And do give NYC a try. Not all are short and brutish. Some of us are quite fun and lovable! :-)
