Moving to Saudi Arabi with my husband, and trying to do some preliminary research about my future lifestyle. It seems that most women do not work - I'm a teacher and this has always been an important part of my life. Are there any opportunities for women to find such jobs?

Also, I've been reading a lot about compound life in Jeddah and how insular it can  be, but at the same time, it doesn't seem any better to live outside a compound - then you're just isolated. Can anyone who's living in a compound in Jeddah tell me what kinds of activities and social interacions happen within compounds?

Most westerners live in compounds in Jeddah, and though life can be a little insular, it's also not EMPTY. There's lots of activities and a great sense of camaraderie between neighours. Chances are, you'll find a lot of commonality between these people, even if you don't share the same world-view. Alternatively, if you live in an apartment outside of your compound it will be much more difficult making friends and you'll have to actively seek out clubs and events. Furthermore, you'll have to wear an abaya every time you step foot outside your house, whereas, in the compound, you don't have to do this.

Hi, yes it is possible to find work in Jeddah, particularly as a teacher. Our school has 2 positions available for a Sept 5th start. It is an established school in Jeddah with national and international curriculum streams. We are currently seeking female Computer Studies teacher for 6 (possibly 11) periods a week for grades 7, 8 9 & 10. Ideally this person could also assist with web site design and maintenance. We are also recruiting a female Phys Ed teacher for 20 periods a week for Grades 6 to 10. If you are interested could you please let me know and then we can exchange email addresses.
