Hi, I am moving through my work to Cape Town for 6 months in January. My pregnant girlfriend is planning on joining me at the end of the month or start of February for the remaining 5 months. She is due to give birth in April and because of this we are having great difficulty finding medical insurance to cover her. Can anyone give us any advice?

Hi Gerryhart, sorry to answer a question with a question....but where are you moving from and what nationality are you? Also, is your girlfriend planning to give birth in Cape Town or back in your home country?

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. I am moving from the UK and my girlfriend is planning on giving birth in SA.

...oh, and we are both British.

Hi Gerry, two of my children were born in Cape Town and I can assure you that the hospitals are as good, or better, than you will find in any other country. First-rate staff and excellent facilities. You will need to go private, but the cost will be much less than the equivilant in the UK. Note that most doctors will encourage cesarean as 2/3 of women in SA opt for this - in private hospitals anyway. Your wife's birth and pregnancy will only get covered by medical insurance once she has been on the scheme for 12 months or more.
