Areas and Suburbs in Taipei

TIANMU
Tianmu is a district north of the city centre and is known to be quite ritzy. Expat families mostly find the area attractive because of its large foreign community and its close proximity to international schools for children. There are many stores specialising in western products, selling everything from large sized shoes to a favourite snack from home. The new baseball stadium and the Dayeh Takashimaya shopping mall are also located in the area.

SHILIN
Shilin is just adjacent to Tianmu, but is a little cheaper and still has many cultural attractions, including the National Palace Museum.

ZHONGSHAN
Zhongshan is also in the northern region of the city. This area is defined by important temples, large museums and parks.

DA’AN
Da’an is in the south of the city and is built around the beautiful Da’an Park. There is a well-known weekend jade and flower market here.

SHIDA
Shida is in the south and is the area surrounding Taipei Normal University. The high concentration of young people has left this space with a youthful, funky vibe. The streets are filled with food stalls, night markets and plenty of bars and clubs.

XIMENDING
Ximending is a very fashionable area with lots of pedestrian streets, open public spaces and performance centres and theatres. As a result it’s extremely popular with the hip, trendy teenagers and young adults. There are often street performances and it can get very busy on the weekends.

XINYI
Xinyi is the area home to Taipei 101 and is very modern. There are lots of hotels, office blocks and city hall in this area.
