Advice for hiring a maid in Dubai

Can anyone give a good indication of a monthly salary and benefits for a maid in Dubai. Also, is it better to source and sponsor someone yourself, or to consult an agency?

I would say 1500 to 2000 AED per month for a live-in full-time maid with 1 day off per week, is a pretty reasonable amount to pay someone. You can certainly tap into your expat network and see if anyone knows anyone who has a sister who knows someone who needs a job, but there are also plenty of agencies that exist solely to help you with this task.

Either way, make sure you're aware of the legal implications surrounding maid sponsorship, and for a good overview of everything you need to know, read the Expat Arrivals Hiring a Maid in Dubai page.

some good advice is to ALWAYS talk to previous employers when hiring a maid, not just in Dubai but anywhere. However nice they seem, it is always worth getting proper references.

It depends on what you want them to do. If it's looking after children make sure you get references and ask why they are changing jobs. People do not let go of good maids because they are rare and hard to find. If you bring someone in new to the country you risk they won't like it and if you hire someone locally they are more expensive. Of course if it's just cleaning using an agency is a simple route and you are not responsible for them. Per hour it more expensive but visas cost around AED 10,000 pa you are totally responsible for this person being in the country and act as their guarantor. If you've not managed a maid before, start through an agency before you jump in head first. If you'd like me to recommend any please let me know because different agencies are good for different parts of Dubai.

Hope this helps.
