Thinking of taking up a contract in Dubai, but coming from the States I'm worried it's going to be too conservative and I won't be able to enjoy the lifestyle I have now. I'm not a big boozer, but enjoy a nice ale or occasional glass of wine. I have heard different things about alcohol in the UAE - will I be able to drink in Dubai? I heard something about having to have a license? Anyone got any info on this?

Hey Phil, the UAE is a lot more liberal than many of it's Middle Eastern neighbours, and although a Muslim country, alcohol is sold and allowed to be consumed in Dubai. It's generally sold in restaurants belonging to hotels, and it can be purchased for private consumption at selected liquor stores. In order to purchase it you have to have a special licence, and this can be arranged once you have your residence permit. There is a beer store in Ajman that does not require a license, all taxis know of it
