Hi Everyone, I am an IT professional, i have been offered a job in Ras Lanuf in the oil and gas industry. I was wondering if anyone can give me the real time feedback on the situation out there. Have a few questions please add to the answers if you feel that i missed on something... 1) How good is the security situation for expats working in remote areas and the local's behaviour towards them? 2) Are there any Health & Safety issues working in the oil refineries? i am told that you get to go home for around 20 days every two months is this due to any health risks that employees are exposed to or just the isolation factor? 3) Domestic help i read about its available in main cities like Tripoli or Benghazi, can anyone suggest possible options for Ras Lanuf please? 4) Are there any good GYMs around there? and or Swimming Pools for excersize? I would like to appreciate and thank you guys in advance for the help.. cheers Fahim

Hi fahim007, the security situation in Libya is still quite unstable, and with elections coming up in June, it could change and deteriorate rapidly, so I would suggest holding off on going to Libya until the situation is more settled and seeing what happens after the elections.

There are still ongoing reports of protests and sporadic fighting. In a number of areas of Libya, particularly Tripoli, the Nafusa Mountains and some areas in the north east, militia groups continue to operate and hold territory and have successfully resisted attempts by the National Transitional Council to disarm them. Generally, most foreign embassies are advising their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Ras Lanuf, i.e - don't go there unless you absolutely have to.

Have a read of our Safety in Libya page for more on the security situation in the country.

Does anyone want to share danger and hardship salary uplifts for working in Libya. My company currently offers 20% which is not enough to make me interested in relocating.
