Home security in Kenya

What home security  measures should be taken in Nairobi. My husband is granted an accommodation allowance, but we're unsure if we need to negotiate for a security gaurd, an alarm system or any other additional expenses.

Home security is definitely a norm in Kenya, and most expats living in stand alone houses outside the CBD take out a package that includes night-watchman or stationed gaurds, motion-sensor lights, burglar bars, panic buttons and night intruder alarms. Many expat homes have the burglar bars, panic buttons, night alarms and lights already installed. It's merely a matter of getting in touch with the security company and paying for activiation.

Regardless though, make an effort to negotiate this as part of your expat contract. It's standard for employers to pay for expat housing in Nairobi.
