Hey....anyone here living in Dubai and able to offer us some insights into the transport in the emirate? We moving there in August and just wondering if it's worth buying a car in Dubai as we haven't heard such great things about the transport system there.

Dear Phil Cannot agree that the public transport in Dubai is great, but its fairly reliable based on the location of your home, office and the type of work you do. If you are having a sales or business development work which requires you to move around Dubai or UAE, and the company do not have a chauffeur driven car then you definitely require a car. If you live in communities like arabian ranches, the villa ,silicon oasis, the palm etc then the metro doesnt reach here and hence you might need to buy or lease a car. The same is the case if your office location is an area not reached by metro and your office doesnt provide any transportation. If you can brief me on your home and office location, and your work type i can let you know if you can really leave off the car. Hi Phil, public transport in Dubaiis fairly relaible and you can get by without owning a car, many expats find themselves buying a car. It's not a complicated or expensive process and cars are not hard to come by - both new and used. I'd suggest having a look at our Buying a Car in Dubai page for some useful tips on how to go about this.

There are quite a few costs for owning a car in Dubai, you need to consider yearly registration fees, Salik (tolls) can add up very quickly in addition to insurance.

Compared to public transport, owning a car is much more convenient as it typically takes longer getting somewhere via metro & bus. Using taxis on a daily basis ends up being very expensive.
