My Mother of 92 wants to return to Cape Town. Does anyone know if there is a medical aid scheme she qualifies for at that age? She has been under the NHS prior to this so hasn't needed any personal insurance.

Hi Jane

There is a limited amount of state support for elderly citizens in South Africa but this isn't adequate to cover the majority of ailments older people might be susceptible to. It's highly recommended that you look into some form of medical aid.

Have a look at our Healthcare in Cape Town and Healthcare in South Africa pages for more.

Best of luck,
