Can anyone tell me how australians get taxed in Malaysia. I have been told by an australian in kuala lumpur that he is getting paid a large sum for contract work... but has to pay the tax first... before getting it paid to him... i always thought the tax came out of the money when you got paid... is it just me or does this sound suss?

I'm an Australian Expat paid locally and the tax is just withheld same as any employee in Malaysia

It's said that you need to pay your tax at Australia Tax Rate that means even though you have paid tax in the expat country but you still need to pay the tax balance in Australia should Australia tax rate being higher then expat country.
