Education and Schools in Romania

education_romaniaExpats moving to Romania with their families and children will be pleased to know that there are international schools in Romania. Education in Romania is taught in Romanian, and as such, most expats choose to send their children to international or private schools. It is compulsory for all children from age five upwards to attend school. Many parents send their three-, four- and five-year old children to kindergarten classes before they reach primary school-going age.

All of the international schools in Romania are situated in Bucharest. There isn’t an extensive selection of schools, but there are a few and all of them offer an affordable and quality education for the young expat community. Schools also offer an important tool for parents who wish to make new acquaintances and form social connections while in a foreign country.

The Romanian school year is typically split into a summer and a winter semester. The first semester begins in September and lasts until February, and the second semester is from February until June. Vacation times are generally scheduled over Easter, Christmas and summer.
