Hi Everyone

Can anyone tell me what, exactly, I'll be entitled to do in Australia with a 457 long-stay business visa?

I'm very confused about this.

Hi! The 457 long-stay business visa is definitely one of the most useful, and most common Australian working visas. Although applying for it can be a pain, the visa will entitle you to (1) work in Australia for up to 4 years (and it can usually be extended), (2) Work as an employee or a contractor, (3) Work in multiple locations, and (4) Bring dependants into the country with you (who will be able to work as well). Hope that helps -- good luck with the application!

Well, for one - pay tuition at Australian local public schools. Those expats with permanent residency status can send their children to state schools for free, but those on a temporary work permit will need to pay the fixed fee associated with their province (though, not all provinces require fees). Regardless though, it will certainly be cheaper than the annual costs attached to international schools. Faith-based schools, on the other hand, may actually be cheaper than state schools in provinces where temporary residents are required to pay tuition.

No, just because your child is in school in Sydney, doesn't mean you can get a temporary visa.

I am applying for a 457 and will be bringing my 19 year old dependent son. He wants to work and go to university. Are there any breaks on college/university costs on a 457?

Hi Bernie

There are no breaks for university fees.

You and your son will be eligible for permanent residency after two years of living in Australia on the 457 visa, at which point you'll be able to apply for student loans and Australian scholarships. At the moment you'll have to pay for his college fees in full.

we are in the process of acquiring our 457 visa - i'm aware we'll need to purchase health insurance (it'll just be 2 of us) - any advice on where to purchase/how much per month per person? - I've read between 250 and 500/month but our employer told us it would be approx. 50/month -
