Advice on moving to Madrid (shipping and schools)

Hiya- We're moving to Madrid with our 14-year-old son, and as he doesn't know any Spanish (apart from a few terms that I won't repeat) we want to put him in either the American International School or a school with a curriculum that's taught mostly in English. Are these kind of schools concentrated in a particular area, and if so, should we look to move close to the school. Also, can anyone make any recommendations for good bilingual schools that teach mostly in English. Also any advice about the application process is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill.

Good morning Bill,

Congratulations for taking the decision and moving to Madrid - a great city you will love I am sure.

Concerning schools for english-speaking expat pupils, I recommend you read my following detailed posts and interactive maps on the topic:

- First have a look at this Interactive map with all the best schools for english-speaking expat kids to get an idea of where they are all situated : http://g.co/maps/6eepz (copy and paste in your navigator). Most of them are in the northern part of Madrid, and only a few are in the center.

- I would recommend choosing first your favorite neighbourhood, then the school for your children. As long as you are in neighbourhoods in the north-eastern part of Madrid, you will be close to most. The best neighbourhood in this part of Madrid are: Chamberi, Salamanca, and then the suburbs, with Pozuelo, Aravaca, La Moraleja. See my interactive map with short presentation of each of the best "family-friendly neighbourhoods" here: http://g.co/maps/b7g8e. If you want to see a presentation of all best neighbourhood for expats, and how to choose yours, you can see my method: http://moving2madrid.com/2011/08/best-place-to-live-2/

- Then, read my post on how to choose the best expat school for your child: http://moving2madrid.com/2011/11/schools-expat-kids-madrid/ (copy and paste in your navigator).

This will give you all the key information to choose the best neighbourhood for your family and the best school for your child.
Be aware that the application processes are starting now, until end of Spring (end of April in most cases).

If you need specific advice or my personal opinion on the best school for your children, do not hesitate to contact me at pierre@moving2madrid.com.

All the best,
Pierre
