How does one go about getting domestic help / staff/ nannies in Singapore? How much do they cost and assuming they live in, what sort of accommodation is expected. Are they mostly Filipinos? Is a recruitment company the best way to recruit domestic staff in Singapore and can anyone recommend a good agency? What is their English usually like? It would be helpful to hear from local expats living in Singapore. G

Hi George-

Finding a maid in Singapore is easy, and many expats find that this is one small luxury they're able to afford in their new destination.

Costs are variable, and though I hate to say it, often dependent on the nationality of your maid. For a Filipino maid, you'll need to at least pay minimum rates that are set by the Filipino embassy, which are as 400 USD per month according to the web site. Mind you, this is for a live-in maid, and other costs, like fees that are payable to the Singaporean government will also be applicable. I think it is best to find this type of maid through a recruitment agency, as they provide a profile of the maid and also give you the chance to interview her.

If you rather need just a domestic helper to clean a couple of days a week, I think it's better to rely on word of mouth or even to peruse the message boards at local supermarkets.
