Hi Friends I'm having job offer of amount 40K per month and planning to move HK. I'll be placed Lantau Island,HK. Please help me to identify the cost of living in the HK like how much I have to spend monthly on house rent, transport, food and etc. Will we survive in this amount and can save something? Thanks DJ

Hi Deepak

There are similar threads on this forum herehere and here - and again here and here.

You can read about the costs of Accommodation in Hong Kong and the general Cost of Living in Hong Kong in the Expat Arrivals guide to Hong Kong.

The short answer is it depends on your lifestyle. I think you should be OK, but you probably won't be able to save too much if there are two of you. A large chunk of your salary is likely to go on rent, so you should perhaps try to negotiate an accommodation allowance with your employer before you move.

Hi DJ,

Congratulations on your job offer.

Your biggest expense when moving abroad is likely to be that of accommodation. You can get a one-bedroom apartment for around HKD 12,000-16,000 per month in the Mid-Levels Area, which is popular with the expat population.

If you buy local, food is cheap because most of it comes from China. If you want to buy international produce then it can cost double the amount it would in say, the UK.

The cost of transport in Hong Kong is reasonable and Hong Kong's public transport is excellent. A car is not needed here, unless you have kids that need to be transported around.

Ultimatley, the amount you save will depend on you lifestyle. There is a lot to do with your leisure time in Hong Kong and it is a shopaholics paradise - so you can understand how it is easy to splurge all your extra cash!

Take a look at our Cost of Living in Hong Kong page for more information.

Good luck!

Hi, i have been offered 40k HKD per month job in HK. I am a single working women earning 14Lac per annum in India. Is it a decent salary to move to HK? Is there any scope of saving with such high cost of living and in which area should i rent the place?
