I can't seem to find much by way of expat reviews and parent comments on the Nexus International School in Singapore (NISS). Anybody on this forum have opinions about it?

It's brand new, starting this August!

Their website (www.nexus.edu.sg) says they've been open since 2007 and currently have 400 students...? I think they're expanding or something in August.

I was just wondering why I couldn't find any parent reviews as they've been open for five years already after all. Just curious to find out more about the standards, vibe etc at the school.

Hi, Nexus International School Singapore opened it's doors in June 2011. (It bought over the previous school Excelsior International) Nexus is owned by Taylor's Education Group which have a portfolio of excellent International schools and university in Malaysia. My two daughters attend the school and couldn't be happier. Class sizes are small but classrooms large. There are approximately 360 students enrolled for the beginning of the academic year which started today and the numbers are set to rise! There is a real community feel to the school and all students no matter what grade get to know one another. The school is IB/PYP accredited and also does IGCSE and Cambridge programme. Our campus is set in lush green tropical trees with large playing fields and a great swimming pool. It really is worth getting in touch and coming to have a look for yourselves!

I went to see the school in June and was very impressed. Yet I kept my child at her current school which I find out to be a misteake. We will be switching to Nexus in January. I'm looking forward to become a Nexus family.

Hi I wonder does anyone have any more information on Nexus at this stage in the year. I am looking at it for my daughter and am wondering how it has gone in it's first real academic year after they changed the teachers. Are teachers planning to stay? Is the mood positive? Thanks for your help

Before we moved to Singapore, I too had difficulty researching Nexus because they seemed to change the name/ownership quite a lot! In April 2012, before we moved to SG, I visited with my children and we visited a couple of the established schools and Nexus. In fact we were offered places at all 3 schools but our children gave a resounding “yes” to Nexus. Thankfully my husband and I were in full agreement with them. Our children are 10 and 12. This means that my son is presently in Primary School and my daughter is in Middle School. When we joined in August 2012 there was a huge influx of staff/teachers – all the leadership team were new and we have a new head of Primary school also (since December). It would be fair to say that they had to do a lot of work to improve Middle/Senior school but things have really changed since last August. They have really worked on the curriculum and also made the school a lot more cheerful. The new owners are Taylor Education Group who are very experienced in education across the board and who have a good reputation: They have invested heavily in the school and for the long term. The campus is large and spacious and well equipped. However the class sizes are still small. My kids love the school – they “cannot wait until Monday”. I live quite a long way away (about an hour door to door) but I make a point of going in a couple of days a week volunteering – it is such fun to see the tiny little Kindergarteners alongside the towering young men and women who are reaching the pinnacle of their school career. I also enjoy talking with the staff and teachers - there is an Open Door policy and there is a real sense of excitement about the place. The best bit for me is that the parents are very friendly and welcoming. It is quite tricky when you are new to both the school and Singapore. Check out the school website (http://www.nexus.edu.sg/) - the YouTube items give a good flavour of the school. This is a new website (which they are rolling out in stages to iron out any bugs) and there are some bits still missing which is a bit aggravating for existing parents who have come to rely on it but it is mostly OK for prospective parents!

Hi, I'm from Hong Kong and would like to know more about Nexus regarding Year 10 for my daughter. Does any parent have children studying there for similar grade? Please share.

Hi. My daughter is about to start y9. Y10 is the start of the IGCSE course. Do have particular questions? I can ask someone whose child was in year 10 last year if you would find that helpful. Veronica

To Anonymous of 12 August. I am so pleased you like Nexus - And today was the first day of term! Maybe I met you briefly in the Nexus Parent Group Room..I was the one rushing about trying to copy our new "Settling into Singapore" doc .. It's a welcoming bunch of parents there. We had our room renovated just a few months ago. There is a great buzz about the school ... To Anonymous of 9 Aug. I don't anything about One World. All I know about OFS is from parents who left to join Nexus, one of whom I met this morning. She asked how many people we got at our monthly coffee and we said (very proudly) " it's a good number ... 30!" She told us they get 200 at an OFS coffee morning. I really don't have any firsthand knowledge. I didn't even visit it. Your friends obviously like it and the people who have moved to Nexus obviously don't. At the end of the day you know your child and your family best. I would strongly advise that you do a Look See in the three schools. I am sure it will clarify the portions for you. All the best with your relocation plans.

Wow Veronica, you really do give Nexus a resounding thumbs up & that is heartening to know. I remember reading a detailed ode from you on Nexus on the singapore expats message board. Thanks to your detailed post we are seriously considering Nexus for our 4-year old daughter. Our 2nd option is One World (OWIS). Would you be able to advise me on why you feel Nexus scores higher over OWIS or OFS. I mentioned OFS because it comes highly recommended by 3 friends who have kids there. Despite all the brouhaha over UWC, TTS, SAIS, CIS, I am keener on a smaller, warmer environment though with all the facilities of an IB school for my daughter. We are looking to relocate mid-end October this year. Thanks a TON, Veronica. Your in-depth research & detailed review have been very helpful. I look forward to hearing from you.

Moving to Singapore soon and would appreciate an update on Nexus. Most comments here seem very positive - is that still the case? My boy will be 7 in March. Alternatively does anyone have any other recommendations? We are relocating from Japan and whilst my sons spoken English is ok his grasp of reading and writing will be behind those of native speakers. Any advice/recommendations much appreciated.

Dear jon77 Nexus continues to go from strength to strength! Some of the year groups are already full so you may want to book an appointment to visit. They have improved the sports facilities and there is lots of space for a little boy to run around. There is a strong English Language Support Staff and tips for improving reading and writing English are included in the regular Principal’s letter. As you may imagine it is quite usual for an international school to have on their roster those for whom English is not their native tongue. Do have a look at the website to get a feel for what we do and how we do it – but nothing beats a visit! I wish you all the best in your move to Singapore – we too have lived in Japan – you may miss the seasons! Singapore has much to commend it, however, and I hope you will enjoy your posting here, the gateway to South East Asia! Veronica PS – Sorry I can never remember my sign in details so am “anonymous”

Ha ha ha! you discovered my secret! I am a fully paid up spy, Try other forums (fora is more correct but sounds odd) there ARE others who post .... I honestly don't know why I am the only one here.... I am a very keen Nexus parent is all.... And I get notifications when people ask questions about Nexus. It is quite difficult to find info on the school as it's history is rather convoluted.

Hello, Is there any feedback from other parents apart from Veronica..Wondering if V is a Nexus agent.
Anonymous (not verified) on 6 Feb 2014 - 06:38
Thnx Veronica for your detailed feedback. I had a question on learning support...does the school accommodate different learning styles?thanks
Anonymous (not verified) on 6 Feb 2014 - 22:11
Yes. There is a strong belief that there is no "one size fits all" type of education.
Anonymous (not verified) on 3 Mar 2014 - 22:01
Maybe we will see you in couple of weeks time Veronica :) we choose Nexus based on Taylor Group reputation.
