Hi,

I'm moving to Melbourne with my wife in a few months and we are trying to sort out accommodation. Can anyone advise me on some of the best suburbs to live in Melbourne? Not too far from the city... Thanks

Hey Jonny, if you're looking to be close to the city, try Docklands or Port Melbourne....

If you can afford it, for location and quality of the area, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills are the best. Templestowe is another good area. As a general rule, outside the CBD, north and western areas are not great, but east is the best. South east is somewhere in between when you get over half an hour from the city.

Any particular aspect make north & western not good?

That observation about our northern and western suburbs might be offensive to those who live there, unfortunately. I live north east of the CBD, and don't venture over 'the other side' very often simply because I'm happy in my own leafy patch. The east and south eastern suburbs are more expensive to live in, and have less of an ethnic population than the west. But to each his own, and it's all Melbourne after all!

I work as a rental home search consultant. I think you should answer what you conveniences you'd like to have for yourself and your wife. What kind of lifestyle you are leading, etc., before anyone answers. Something that is "best" for someone could be a hellhole for someone else depending on their stage in life, etc.
