Planing to move from Switzerland to the Uk with my two children. Looking for areas that are safe and nice but not too expensive as a single mother. Need A-level state school and a secondary school. Was thinking of Birmingham?

Hi Becky
There are so many areas within the UK, it's difficult to give you any more than a very general answer. London is fantastic, but expensive and some areas have much better schools than others. Many of the mid-sized cities, like Brighton, Briston, Bath or York are fantastic places to live. I don't know much about Birmingham, its Englands second largest city and I'm sure it has some lovely suburbs. Check out some of the property websites to get an idea of rental prices, as this will be your main expense (rightmove.com or zoopla.com). These sites also show local schools and I think include Ofsted reports, which are reports on every state school.

Good luck,

I have lived in different areas of the UK since arriving here 20 years ago. My first place was Wales which I prefer above all others but the economic opporotunities were slim and it is a much more rural environment where i was in the north. Naturally, due to this, it was the cheapest place I have lived by far. I have lived in London and did not like it at all. Too big, too noisy, too crowded and too busy. The prices you pay to live in the big smoke of London are insane and most places do not feel like a community but a conglomerate of travelers in London until they are on their way to the next destination. It is very ethnically diverse which I liked but the cons far outweighed the pros for me. I lived in Burnham which is a bit further out of London but had to commute into London for work. The actually place I was living was lovely but the commute was a drag and the price for what I got for my money wasn't the best. I finally settled in Oxford which is a great compromise. It is not cheap but with your housing budget you can get something quite nice. The rail and coach links to London are 24 hours and Oxford still has a smaller town feel with all the bells and whistles of the big city. I am quite pleased with the choice to stay here. Our home is a 4 bedroom property, 10 minutes on the bus or bike into the city centre. We paid under your lower end budget for it last year and couldnt be more pleased. Hope this helps.
