I have a French driver's licence and am working in South Africa until next year December; do I need to convert my French driver's licence to enable me to drive legally in South Africa?

Hi there

Unfortunately only foreign licences that are in an official language of South Africa are valid (in practice, English).

The law does, however, say that a non-English licence can is valid if it is accompanied by: "A certificate of authenticity or validity issued in an official language of SA by a competent authority, or a translation of that license in an official SA language, is attached to the license."

For more information, have a look at our Transport and Driving in South Africa page.

All the best,
