Do you need a special permit to park on-street in certain places in Paris. If so, is it possible to get a city wide permit, or are they only allocated based on the area you live? Is it cheaper to pay for off-street parking in a garage?

Unfortunately, parking in Paris is about as easy to find as Jupiter's sixth moon on a cloudy night. There's no such thing as on-street parking permits, all are subject to metred payment - which quickly gets expensive. What's more, some metres have a time limit - so you can only spend a maximum of two hours in one space. Alternatively, there are long-term parking contracts, and you say, off-street garage parking options.
