Accessing blocked internet sites in China.

Hi - I'm trying to find out about using the internet while in China. I read that some sites such as Facebook and Skype are blocked. Also I'd like to view BBC iPlayer and other blocked TV channels and social media sites. I gather you can by access these sites by disguising your IP address. Has anyone got experience of this, and can you suggest the best options?
