Is it safe to pursue job opportunities in Libya at this point?

Anonymous (not verified) on 23 May 2011 - 13:32
No, as of May 2011 it is still not safe to pursue job opportunities in Libya - no matter how attractive the expat package. Fighting between rebel forces and the Libyan government, lead by long-time leader Muammar el-Qaddafi, continues to make the country unsafe for foreign enterprise. NATO is currently involved in a bombing campaign agains the oil-rich nation, and even high-level Libyan bureaucrats are defecting to neighbouring Tunisia.

Most expats have already been evacuated by their respective embassies or by the employers who enticed them abroad to begin with.

Is it safe to visit Tripoli for a three day business trip?

The situation in Libya is slowly stabilising, and provided adequate precautions are taken, a trip to Tripoli is possible. Try to organise to be met by your local host at the airport and travel with someone who knows the local environment and security landscape. Be sure to monitor local news. It's best not to travel outside of Tripoli at this time.
