I have been offered a job in Nigeria Lagos. They would provide me with housing, car and local expenses apart from the savings part. I wish to know about the family life in Nigeria. How comfortable is it?? Also what are the options for schooling there?? I have been told that they will take care of the school fee etc of my kid in indian school there. How good is that school?? Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend you read this interview with Anvaya, another Indian living in Lagos, Nigeria. She answers a lot of the questions you ask, and specifically talks about how despite common beliefs, expat life in Lagos is suprisingly safe. That said, she does say that they mainly stay in at night, and cautions against flaunting money - especially around the house help.

Depending on your salary package, some expats find that are able to have a much more comfortable life than they had in their home country, plus they can save.

The Indian school, which upholds a CBSE curriculum has over 2000 students, and is well-reputed. Though, the senior schools slightly falls behind the junior and primary school in terms of quality.

Hi, Lets first talk about the school. The Indian Language School has a CBSE curriculum and has over 2000 students studying currently. The primary school is very good, at par with any school in India. The school conducts many extra curricular activities such as fancy dress competitions, annual day, celebrates all the Indian festivals etc. The sports facilities are: badminton, swimming, football and cricket. However, the school lacks large grounds for sports similar to those in India. The effort taken by the teachers is commendable. I can talk specifically of the primary school since my son in is UKG. For older kids, home tutions are available by Indians; many classes such as dance, art/craft etc are also conducted in Lagos. I would say that your children would not lack much, except Lagos does not have parks or public spaces. However, it also depends on what your benchmarks are, like, if your children are studying in an IB school in India, then you may find ILS lacking in several aspects. Family life otherwise is quite comfortable. There are many avenues to interact with fellow Indians. Safety issues are not as much now as these were some years back. The city has shopping options, cinemas (only two though) and some beach resorts. Hope this helps. Else do contact me for any other help

Rice is in abundance as well as other meals you enjoy in india. You only have to compare your 1.25 lac Indian currency offer and rate same with 65,000 current job earnings in nigerian 'naira' value, consider tax over there in india which is quite minimal in nigeria as well as other expenditures, then make yourself the better choice. Goodluck is my president and goodluck flows in nigeria! Come, meet and share goodluck!!! Stay back if you've not been offered a job already 'cos unemployment is at stake in nigeria, although expatriates are easily offered better opportunities, unlike an unemployed '6 years' indegent/Nigerian university graduate... but the search could be pathetic. Good luck!!!

my kid is in 9th std. how about higher education in lagos

Hi Anonymous,

There are a handful of tertiary education institutions in Lagos. You will need to look at their programs and see if those are suitable for your child.

Many wealthy Nigerians send their kids overseas for university, as an internationally recognised degree if very valuable.
