Hi Expats !

I am Canadian citizen looking to accept a job offer to work in Dubai in a couple of months. Can anyone advise me on how I go about getting the correct permits. What documents do I need to have ready to apply for my work visa ? And once I get a work visa does that include permenant residency in Dubai as well ?

Also how long does the visa for Dubai usually take to process ? I am getting quite worried as there is now not much time left before I leave. Any personal insights would be really helpful.

Thanks

Hey Wallace,

In most cases your employer should deal with the organization of your visa and work permit. Your work permit allows you to work in Dubai but your residency visa is a different document which you will be essential for you to do things like open a bank account and buy a car. They are usually only valid for two years.

I'd contact your employer and ask whether they've already started to apply for your visas and whether you need to provide them with any documents, etc.

Please take a look at the Expat Arrivals pages on Work Permits for Dubai and Visas for Dubai to get a good overview on the requirements for expats taking up job offers in the emirate.

Best of Luck with your move to the Middle East.

Dear Wallace, If you have been offered a job, then the visa and residency permit will be taken by your employer. Normally within two to three days you will get your residency visa. The usual procedures are to submit your attested degree certificate along with passport copies and passport size photographs with white background to apply for your residency visa. Once the visa is issued you can enter the country with it and has 60 days to get your residency permit stamped to your passport. In order for your residency permit you need to get your medical done from approved centres in Dubai and has to prove that you are not HIV positive or Hepatatise B positive. There is no permanent residency concept in Dubai, if your employer trade license is from Dubai Economic Department your visa validity is for two years and after two years you need to renew it again. If your employer trade license is from one of the Free zones then your visa validity is for three years. Earlier there was a visit visa on arrival for canadians but due to a diplomatic row its revoked now. If you need any further information please feel free to contact me. Hi Anonymous,

Where are you from ? Only nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a tourist visa before travelling. I am British so I got a visa stamp for free at the border.

I also made an application for a tourist visa for Dubai for my boyfriend who is South Africa citizen and found the process to be fairly swift. The visa was processed and emailed to us in about 10 days.

You do need to hand in all your documents at the Dubai Visa Processing Centre though, so hopefully there is one close by to you. Otherwise look for an agent to assist.

You might also find the information on the Expat Arrivals Visas for Dubai page useful.

Hope this helps,

Shantalie

Hello all, I have been offered a job in the UAE, which will be a transfer with my existing company. I only have Secondary School/High School certification. I also have Prince 2 and 10 years experience in project management. My company in Dubai are struggling to find out whether I can move over. Do you know if people without degrees can work in Dubai in the IT side business, where I would be sponsored by a company? Thanks

Unfortunately your HIV status will be declared for you after your mandatory HIV antibody blood test which is required before your work permit is processed. Please take my advice an do not come to the UAE, it is impossible to avoid the blood test, and the authorities will make it very unpleasant for you when your status is discovered - Sorry!

Hi Kapoorsmart, how much was your bank loan and from which bank. Upon knowing u have hiv, did they waived off your loan. Also, which bank credit card u have & how much money u used. upon knowing ur hiv sstatus what they did. Did they make settlement or waived off or in unsettled/absconding status. I know many agents who do such settlements. Plz let me know if u r intrested
