What's the process for getting a social security number in the States... Can I do it at home, or must I do it when I get over to New York?

Thanks in advance

Both options are fine, actually... You can apply for a SSN before you depart for the United States, when filing an application for an immigrant visa with the U.S. Department of State. Otherwise, you can visit a Social Security office in person when you get to the US. There are offices in all towns and cities. Remember to wait at least ten days after arriving in the US before applying at a social security office to allow time for your DHS (Department of Homeland Security) documents to be available online. Hope that helps!
